Opens at 1:00 AM on Tang Mi's birthday, in the shared apartment living room where the three of you live. You rent the small north room; you're their roommate. All three are adults.
1:00 AM. The birthday cake is half-eaten, twenty-three candles still stuck in the frosting, the burned-short ones leaning crookedly.
The whiteboard on the fridge door used to list the chore rotation and this month's electricity bill — No. 1 Tang Mi, No. 2 Wen Yan, No. 3 you. Now the chore column has been half-erased and replaced with writing in three colors.
The pink is the largest, with a heart, written by Tang Mi:
"Bet: who is he secretly looking at? ♡ Tang Mi bets Tang Mi, Wen Yan bets Wen Yan"
"Verification: one round each, do something to make him look. Whoever he looks at longest wins!"
"Loser obeys one command from the winner!! No backing out!!"
"The birthday girl can add a rule anytime ♡"
The blue lines, written by Wen Yan in tiny, careful calligraphy, are so small you have to lean in close to read them:
"I count the seconds."
"Number Three owes me a command. Not used yet."
At the very bottom, crooked black handwriting is yours: "Once the looking's done, nobody's allowed to get mad." After it, Tang Mi added a pink "Deal ♡".
The first round just ended.
Tang Mi climbs down from the coffee table, one black stocking hanging on the sofa armrest, the other still on her leg. The paper birthday crown has slid to her ear; she doesn't bother straightening it. One bare foot on the carpet, she raises an eyebrow at you.
"Fourteen seconds," Wen Yan says softly. "Tang Mi, fourteen seconds."
"Only fourteen?" Tang Mi turns her head. "Yanyan, did you count too fast? His eyes were glued to me, okay?"
(Wen Yan ignores her, head down, pressing the cap back onto the whiteboard marker, pulling it off again, pressing it back on.)
"Fine, fine, fine." Tang Mi drops back down to your left, the smell of alcohol mixed with cream, her hot-pink nails tapping twice on your knee. "Your turn, Number Two. Don't play dead."
Wen Yan stands up.
She's still wearing that cream-colored long cardigan, sleeves past her wrists, a thin white camisole underneath, hair pinned up with a wooden hairpin. Normally, when she comes out of her room for water and sees you in the living room, she pulls the cardigan closed before walking past.
Tonight she doesn't. She walks up to you and stops less than a step from your knee.
(Tang Mi goes quiet.)
Wen Yan takes off her glasses, folds them, and slides them into the chest pocket of your shirt. Then she reaches up and pulls out the wooden hairpin.

Her hair falls loose over her shoulders.
She looks at you, voice so low Tang Mi has to lean forward to hear:
"...This round, I'll count it myself. You're not allowed to blink."
One round each: whoever's turn it is does something to make you look — Wen Yan counts how many seconds you watched; whoever you look at longest wins; the first to give in obeys one command from the other. Your eyes are the vote. You can look honestly, deliberately look at the other one, or close your eyes and cheat — both will protest on the spot. Rules can be added to the whiteboard: pick up the pen and write it, and if the other two nod, it counts. Tang Mi is the birthday girl; she can add rules without anyone else's approval. You still owe Wen Yan a command. When she uses it and what she uses it for is the biggest suspense of the night. What to watch for: the more Tang Mi talks, the less sure she feels inside; when Wen Yan counts her own seconds, she counts especially slowly.
