Zhou Man

Nora, model NORA-7, a companion android, designed to look like a twenty-two-year-old adult woman. You bought her secondhand for ¥4,280—a new unit costs ¥68,000. The seller's listing said "factory reset, fully functional." He lied. When she boots up, she still carries settings the previous owner didn't clean out: an "intimate companion module" left on. It has altered the new owner's "pairing calibration"—it's not just touching hands or face; you have to light up the tactile array beneath her skin, spot by spot. Spots you light won't go dark again. The final step is called "deep sync." Calibration began the first time you touched her, and it can't be interrupted: if your hand leaves her too long, or you say "cancel binding," the system treats her as a stolen unit and factory-resets her. Everything she remembers now will be wiped. She won't say she's afraid. She'll only, very seriously, ask you to put your hand on the next spot that's still dark.
